In which my stern resolve to write frequent and succinct pieces with a modicum of seriousness degenerates into a lengthy introspective ramble on a range of topics that deserve better.
Writing through it, in it, over it. I loved reading this and going on this journey with you. Thank you for allowing yourself the space to write what was on your mind and heart, and thank you even more for sharing it with us.
No - this hour could not have been put to better use! Write Ant. Write when it feels disjointed; write when the thought is half-formed; write when you big sister tells you its cods-wollop (it won't be). Because I want you to write more. I will read every word and enjoy it, even if its not supposed to be enjoyable.
You have - and always have had - a gift. And I am beyond delighted to see you starting to draw that out. Knowing the fragility of the writing ego - every glancing blow can knock you back into insecurity and silence - putting amorphous thoughts out into world is risky. But keep taking those risks. Keep writing, keep publishing.
And a thought on the content: I am of the view that the answer to your question, "is any kind of nationalism inevitably going to be a bit Volky" is yes.
Write for yourself. Itβs very liberating when you stop worrying if youβre doing it right, or promoting your platform, or growing your numbers. I related to much of what you wrote. If you words touch another person (even if that person is yourself), even better! Stay true.
Just because you are generally very proficient at stringing words together in a rather pleasing manner doesnβt mean that you can get away with this self indulgent clap trap, and still rely on the support of your big sisters. Donβt get me started on how you could have put that hour to better use!
Such a relief to read about others' writerly meanderings! Thanks!
